Skin Conditions

Eczema is a term for a group of medical conditions that cause the skin to become inflamed or irritated.

Eczema often starts at a very young age but can develop at any stage in life. Eczema is different for everyone and the symptoms can present differently as well. Some of the more common symptoms are itchiness, very dry skin, swollen or sore patches of skin and often redness. Over time it can become crusty and scaly and on occasion blisters may develop and crack, weep or peel causing infection. Scratching can also make the area thick and leathery over time.

Eczema often appears as a rash on the inside of elbows, behind the ears, hands and feet, back of knees, buttocks or even on the face.

Psoriasis is a skin condition that can affect anyone. It is more common in people aged between 15 and 35 years old. When you have psoriasis your skin cells grow faster than normal. The body develops new skin cells every month to replace any skin that flakes or sheds, but with psoriasis the new skin cells are forming within days and move rapidly to the surface. Dead skin cells accumulate and result in thicker patches of itchy, red and dry skin.

Psoriasis symptoms differ from person to person and are also dependant on the type of psoriasis you have. Common symptoms are red, irritated skin, nail problems on fingers and toe including discoloration, scaly skin, raised and inflamed skin.
