COPD

COPD stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

COPD is used to describe a number of lung conditions that cause shortness of breath, will gradually worsen and that are long term.

The most common are chronic asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

The main symptoms of COPD are shortness of breath, increased coughing and mucus generation.

Emphysema

Emphysema is a condition in which the air sacs of the lungs are damaged and enlarged causing breathlessness.

Emphysema is generally caused by long term exposure to particular industrial pollutants or dusts or cigarette smoking. A very small percentage of cases are caused by genetic disorders. There is no known cure for emphysema but it is treatable and preventable.

Symptoms of Emphysema can include fatigue, discolouring of the skin due to lack of oxygen, breathlessness with any type of exertion and in some cases breathlessness without exertion, wheezing, weightloss, recurrent chest infections and phlegm production with a persistent cough

Bronchitis

Bronchitis is an inflammation or swelling of the bronchial tubes which are the air passages between the nose and the lungs.

Bronchitis is a condition where the lining of the bronchial tubes becomes inflamed or infected. Sufferers of bronchitis have a reduced ability to breathe in air and oxygen into their lungs, they also have heavy mucus or phlegm forming in their airways. Some of the signs of bronchitis can be a persistent mucus producing cough, wheezing, chest tightening, breathlessness and headaches.
